This year one of my grandmother (one of my favorite people in the entire world) turns 79. She has been spending the winter down in Florida and was up this past week to visit so we celebrated her birthday a bit early. In our traditional family style we threw a last minute impromptu birthday party. My sister and I were in charge of cake making, so some serious cake making we did!
My sister brought over THREE boxes of boxed chocolate cake mix (not quite sure we needed this much but that's okay, it was fun anyways!). I was a little bored by the plain old chocolate mix so I turned to my Vintage Cakes book for inspiration. We decided to mix in a few extras to our cakes...
4 Fruits Chocolate cake (the chocolate frosting cake with strawberries on the edge): chocolate cake mix with 4 fruits preserves
Chocolate Carmel (the white frosted cake- with white sugar sprinkles of course): chocolate cake mix with Ghirardelli carmel sauce swirled in
We also made a bunch of plain chocolate cupcakes for the boring people :)
The decorating got a bit messy but that's what makes it fun. While waiting for the cakes to bake Virginia and I crafted easy little cake garlands to top our cakes- total Pinterest style (quick & crafty instructions coming tomorrow!).
Gran loved her cakes and we had a fantastic time celebrating her almost 79th birthday. Happy early birthday Gran!
